Ayurvedic herbal remedies in Myasthenia gravis

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease. Patient will be having varying degrees of weakness of the skeletal (voluntary) muscles of the body. For the majority of individuals with myasthenia gravis, life expectancy is not lessened by the disorder.

The characteristic feature of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after rest. Certain muscles such as those that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, chewing, talking, and swallowing are often, but not always, involved in the disorder. The muscles that control breathing and neck and limb movements may also be affected.
Myasthenia gravis is caused by a defect in the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles. It occurs when there is interruption in passing of neurochemical impulses between the nerve and muscle, at the neuromuscular junction (place where nerve cells connect with the muscles).

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease because the immune system – which normally protects the body from foreign organisms – mistakenly attacks the body itself.

Sypmtoms:
Although myasthenia gravis usually affetcs muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, and swallowing are most frequently affected. The onset of the disorder may be sudden. Symptoms often are not immediately recognized as myasthenia gravis.

In most cases, the first noticeable symptom is weakness of the eye muscles. In others, difficulty in swallowing and slurred speech may be seen first. The degree of muscle weakness involved in myasthenia gravis varies from patient to patient, ranging from a single set of muscle involvement to a a group of different muscles involvement – sometimes including those that control breathing – are affected. Symptoms, which vary in type and severity, may include a drooping of one or both eyelids (ptosis), blurred or double vision (diplopia) due to weakness of the muscles that control eye movements, unstable or waddling gait, weakness in arms, hands, fingers, legs, and neck, a change in facial expression, difficulty in swallowing and shortness of breath, and impaired speech (dysarthria).

Myasthenia, in new born babies, may occur due to transfer of immune proteins (antibodies) from a mother affected with myasthenia gravis. Generally, cases of neonatal myasthenia gravis are temporary and the child’s symptoms usually disappear within 2-3 months after birth. Other children develop myasthenia gravis indistinguishable from adults. Myasthenia gravis in juveniles is common.

Myasthenia gravis is not directly inherited nor is it contagious. Rarely, children may show signs of congenital myasthenia. These are not autoimmune disorders, but are caused by defective genes.

Unfortunately, a delay in identifying is quite common. Because weakness is a common symptom of many other disorders, the diagnosis is often missed in people who experience mild weakness.

A special blood test can detect the presence of immune molecules or acetylcholine receptor antibodies. Most patients with myasthenia gravis have abnormally elevated levels of these antibodies. However, antibodies may not be detected in patients with only ocular forms of the disease.

Single fiber electromyography (EMG), helps in identifying lack of transmission of impulses from nerv to the muscle. Computed tomography (CT) may be used to identify an abnormal thymus gland or the presence of a thymoma, which is another cause for myasthenia gravis.

A special examination called pulmonary function testing – which measures breathing strength – helps to predict whether respiration may fail and lead to a myasthenic crisis.

Today, myasthenia gravis can be controlled. There are several therapies available to help reduce and improve muscle weakness. But they should be taken under strict medical supervision due to some major side effects of the drugs.

Thymectomy, the surgical removal of the thymus gland (which often is abnormal in myasthenia gravis patients), reduces symptoms in more than 70 percent of patients.

Ayurvedic herbal remedies: There is no specific research done on this topic, however, Ayurveda offers many immunomodulator agents like Amrutottaram kashayam tablet. It contains Tinospora cordifolia which is a powerful immuno modulator. Rheumatoid arthritis is another auto immune disorder, in which Amrutotaram kashayam tablet has been very effectively used.

In people having generalized muscle weakness along with myasthenia, Ashwagandhadi lehyam, can be given as an adjuvant to mainstream treatment, especially in children. It is sweet and is very easy to take. While Ashwagandha is again another powerful immunomodulator, it is also a good anti oxidant and it improves the strength of the muscles. For local application on head, Bala Ashwagandhadi taila can be used head, forehead and all parts of body half an hour before taking hot water bath, in the morning.

ASTHMA AND ITS AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

In Ayurveda Asthma has been described as “SWASA ROGA”.

Defination
Respiratory distress or breathlessness is known as swasa roga.

CAUSES OF SWASA ROGA

According to Ayurveda causes of Swasa rog are.
1. Vata propak(vitiating) aahar (diet) vihar(activities)

Ruksha(dry),guru(heavy) diet, excessive intake of cold water and cold drinks, intake of meals much more than the digesting capacity, exposure to dust, smoke and cold air ,living in cold areas, excess of sex, having bath with cold water.

2. Kapha prakopak(vitiating) Aahar(diet) Vihar(activities)
Diet including urad (black grams),til, guru(heavy),abhishandi(kapha producing) food, living in cold areas, exposure to cold air, bathing with cold water.

3. Internal reasons
Suppression of urges, weakness, respiratory disease, inflammation of respiratiory system, lung disorders.

4. External reasons
Injury of throat or chest, residing in dust and smoke, excess of sex and journey.

5. Localised reasons
Inflammation of upper part of trachea, inflammation of any organ of chest.

SAMPRAPTI(PATHOLOGY) OF SWASA ROG
According to Ayurveda the vitiated Pranvayu combines with deranged kapha dosha in the lungs causing obstruction in the pranavaha srotasa(respiratory tract). This results in gasping, labored breathing and respiratory distress. This condition is called Swasa roga.

TYPES OF SWASA ROGA
In Ayurveda five types of Swasa Roga have been described:

1]Maha-shwasa

2]Urdhava-shwasa

3]Chinna-shwasa

4]Tamak-shwasa

5]Kshudra-shwasa

PURVAROOPA

1. Pain in region of heart

2.Pain in region of flanks

3.Upward movement of prana(respiration)

4.Flatulence

5.Sweetless taste of mouth

6.Splitting pain in the temples(sides of the forehead)

ROOPA(SYMPTOMS)
 MAHA SWASA
 Heavy breathing

 Helplessness (unable to withstand the trouble)

 Respiration is accompanied with sounds resembling those of high pitch sounds from the nose, resembling that of a bull in heat

 Common sense & intelligence are lost

 Eyes & face are unsteady

 Obstruction of urine & faeces

 Broken voice

 Dryness of throat

 Frequent delusions

 Severe pain in ears, temples & head

 URDHAVA SWASA
 Prolonged upward breathings (expiration) but difficult respiration

 Obstructed movement of vata

 An upward gaze

 KSHUDRA SWASA
 Maruta (Vata) on being aggravated by exertion & overeating, produces Kshudra Shwasa which subsides by itself (without any medication) i.e. heavy breathing on exertion, passes of soon by rest & is thus not very troublesome.

TREATABLE OR NOT

According to Ayurveda out of five types first three are not curable. ‘Tamak-swasa is yapya’(Controllable) and is difficult to cure. The last one(KSHUDRA SWASA) is curable. More than 75% of the cases of swasa roga belong to last two catagories.

SWASA ROGA IS A SEVERE DISEASE,BECAUSE OF IT POSSIBLY PATIENT DIES AFTER ASPHYXIA,SYNCOPE AND COMA.

TREATMENT OF SWASA ROGA

All types of swasa roga are not described according to doshas infact they have been differentiated according to symptoms. All types of swasa roga are vatakaphaj so all of them are treated in same manner.

1. Find reasons and eliminate them

2. Diet, liquids and medicines should have properties of reducing vataj and kaphaj doshas.

3. If patient is healthy then sodhan chikitsa should be done with vaman, virechan and then sham chikitsa should be done with advised diet and medicines.

4. In weak and lean patients vata nashak Ayurvedic preprations should be given with suitable anupan.

5. In healthy patients sanehan and swedan(oleation and sudation)should be done.

Armour Against Arthritis in Ayurveda

Osteoarthritis results from structural changes in the articular cartilage in joints, usually those that are weight-bearing, such as the spine and knees. Hereditary factors may also be responsible for the onset of this disease. Call it Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis, it signifies ’inflammation of joints’. It is derived from two Greek words: ’athron’ meaning joints, and ’itis’ meaning inflammation. Arthritis occurs in various forms, the most frequent being Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that usually occurs in the old age group. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a serious disease, which affect not only the joints of fingers, wrists, hip, knees, and feet, but also the muscles, tendons and other tissues of the body. Causes and Symptoms Main symptoms of Osteoarthritis are pain and stiffness in the joints.

Pain usually increases after exercise. Rheumatoid Arthritis is often called the ‘cooked food disease’. It usually develops gradually over several months, with persistent pain and stiffness in one or more joints. Ultimately the whole body is affected. Symptoms include anemia, colitis, constipation, deformed hands and feet. Osteoarthritis results from structural changes in the articular cartilage in joints, usually those that are weight-bearing, such as the spine and knees. Hereditary factors may also be responsible for the onset of this disease. Cure from the Kitchen Garlic Garlic is an effective remedy for Arthritis. It contains an anti-inflammatory property that accounts for its effectiveness in the treatment of this disease. Garlic may be taken raw or cooked, according to individual preference. Bananas Bananas, being a rich source of vitamin B6, have proved useful in the treatment of Arthritis.

A diet of only bananas for three or four days is advised in treating this condition. The patient is given eight or nine bananas daily during this period and nothing else. Lime The citric acid found in lime is a solvent of uric acid, which is the primary cause of some types of Arthritis. Juice of one lime, diluted with water, may be taken once a day, preferably first thing in the morning. Sesame Seeds Intake of teaspoon of black sesame seeds, soaked in a quarter cup of water overnight, has been found to be effective in preventing frequent joint pains. This water should be taken on empty stomach in the morning. Potato Juice Raw potato juice therapy is considered one of the most successful biological treatments for Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritic conditions. The traditional method of preparing potato juice is to cut a medium sized potato into thin slices, without peeling the skin, and place the slices overnight in a large glass filled with cold water. The water should be consumed in the morning on empty stomach. Fresh juice can also be extracted from potatoes. A medium-sized potato’s juice should be diluted with a cup of water and drunk first thing in the morning. Raw Juices One cup of green juice, extracted from any green leafy vegetable, mixed in equal proportions with carrot, celery, and red beet juices is good in Arthritis. The alkaline action of raw juices dissolves the accumulation of deposits around the joints and in other tissues.

Green Gram Soup This soup should be prepared by mixing a tablespoon of green gram in a cup of water, with two crushed garlic cloves. It should be taken twice a day. Copper Drinking water kept overnight in a copper container accumulates traces of copper, which is said to strengthen the muscular system. A copper ring or bracelet is worn for the same reason. Calcium Several patients have found that with regular intake of calcium, their joint pains have either been relieved or have disappeared entirely. This mineral should be taken in the form of calcium lactate. Coconut or Mustard Oil Warm coconut oil or mustard oil, mixed with two or three pieces of camphor should be massaged on stiff and aching joints. This not only increases the blood supply, but also reduces inflammation and stiffness. Ideal diet for Arthritis Patients The diet of an Arthritis patient should be planned so as to produce alkalinity in the blood. It should include fruits and vegetables in the form of salads, with at least, two cooked vegetables. In severe cases, it would be advisable to put the patient on raw vegetable juice therapy, to be taken three times a day, for about a week. Repeated juice fasts are recommended at intervals of every two months.
